Pumpkin Spice Coconut Cups

It’s nearly the end of October and I’m finally getting into the pumpkin mood. It’s been such a mild fall on the East Coast—I’m talking in the 80s—so turning on the oven has been a slow start. Now that we’re in the steady 50s, I’m ready to go all in with my favorite season full…

Cranberry–Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf Cake

I’ll be celebrating the unsung hero of cakes—The Loaf Cake—with recipes on my blog all week long. Sure, loaf cakes don’t exactly deliver the glory of a beautifully-decorated, three-layer cake or even the cuteness of a cupcake. In my kitchen, they’re my low-maintenance cake loves. Let me explain: You stir the ingredients right in a bowl—no creaming butter necessary—then you bake the loaf…

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Cinnamon Swirl Pancakes with Maple Icing

Before I ever even came close to conquering yeasted cinnamon buns, I made these pancakes to satisfy that craving. They actually resemble cinnamon buns, too, down to their cinnamon swirl and sugary icing. My family and I have always been fans of Bisquick, but after trying the gluten-free version from the supermarket, we weren’t convinced that it was a perfect substitute. So I studied the ingredients on the original mix and replicated its taste and texture.

Juli Bauer and George Bryant’s Gluten-Free Cinnamon Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread

Just last month I had a chance to join George Bryant of Civilized Caveman Cooking and Juli Bauer of PaleOMG along with my longtime friend Brittany Angell for a paleo dinner in NYC. Of course, we went to Hu Kitchen, a known paleo- and gluten-free friendly restaurant and juice bar. We left well fed—and completely satisfied. I even took their famous chocolate bars home with me (my favorite flavor is the Almond Butter + Puffed Quinoa).

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Chocolate-Dipped Coconut-Almond Bars

I am a self-confessed snacker. Some may even call me an all-day grazer. Ever since I first laid my eyes on a KIND bar at Starbucks, it became my afternoon addiction along with coffee. Eventually, I ordered them online by the box. I’d toss them in my canvas bag just in case I got hungry on the subway or lying on the grass in the park. My kids gradually caught on, tasted the bars and there we were fighting for the last bar in the 12-count box. That’s when I knew I needed to make them myself.

Happy Celiac Awareness Month!

Today is the first day in May that we celebrate being gluten-free. It’s been seven years since Isaiah was diagnosed as gluten and dairy intolerant. I can honestly say that his diagnosis changed not only his life, but mine. As a food professional—food magazine editor, bakery owner or recipe columnist—I couldn’t imagine having to re-think everything I did in the kitchen and at the supermarket. Just like you, I had to start from scratch.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Hash Brown Waffles with Sausage Apple Patties and Fried Eggs

Breakfast is my family’s favorite meal of the day. So when we’re feeling like comfort on a plate or when I need a break in my cooking routine, I make dinner for breakfast. This summer, I’m busy wrapping up recipe development for my second cookbook so I’ve been cooking up lots of old favorites for the family, including this recipe—definitely an oldie, but goodie, from my first gluten-free, dairy-free book, Cooking for Isaiah.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Spiced Powdered Doughnuts

If you’ve been to any of my cooking classes, you know that I like to feed people plenty of personal stories and experiences—and doughnuts. This time I made classic powdered doughnuts and just spiced things up a bit with a mix of warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Strawberry Scones

I’ve always had a fascination with strawberries, especially the small, flavor-packed tri-star variety that I find on local Hudson Valley farms. I’ve even had the chance to hand-pick them in the strawberry fields along with my family. So it should come to no surprise that I would put them into everything I make—sweet and savory.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Creamy Cocoa Nib & Almond Butter Smoothie

My kids are calling it a heat wave. We’ve hit the 80s here in Brooklyn. Crazy for this time of year. Now, there’s no denying the one thing that will satisfy me—this thick and creamy smoothie. It’s so good, you could even call it dessert. And making it is really as easy as putting all of the ingredients in a blender and blending until smooth.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Cinnamon-Raisin Bread

What’s the one food that Isaiah misses the most? Bread, of course. Over the years, we’ve found some good store-bought loaves, but I’ve missed the smell of baking bread.

The truth: I wanted to believe that I could make anything gluten-free. That didn’t turn out to be the case—at least, not when it came to bread.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Nutella Coffee Cake

Growing up, I moved around every three to five years. My Roman-born father, Silverio, worked for the Italian government and the second we started settling into our new hometown, it was time to pack up our suitcases again. The one constant besides family, was Nutella. My mom, Penny, would spread the luscious chocolate-hazelnut spread on Italian bread as sandwiches for lunch and she’d swirl it into cakes. My brother, Bernardo, and I would also eat it by the spoonfuls.

Turns out the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. My son, Isaiah, craves the stuff so much so that when he was diagnosed with dairy intolerance (along with his more severe gluten intolerance), we had to say our goodbyes. But, in my constant determination to spoil my kids, I made my own dairy-free Nutella knockoff. Suddenly, there was no turning back to the store-bought kind. Whether you make your own or use the jarred stuff, you’ll love this chocolate-hazelnut twist on classic crumb cake.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Bananas Foster Loaf Cake

People tell me all the time that they cook, but they don’t really bake. And, that baking actually scares them—gluten-free or not. As the rush of December sets into our daily lives, the only thing I consciously want to do is bake so I can feel that warmth that only baking (and cuddling with my kids) gives me. Before I develop new cookies for the holiday season, I just had to bake this banana cake. It’s my comfort food. I hope you’ll take refuge in it, too.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Citrus-Glazed Cranberry-Pistachio Bread

I may be the only one in my family who loves cranberry sauce with the rest of my Thanksgiving meal. I love how the tartness balances out the saltiness and sweetness of the stuffing, turkey and, of course, all of that luscious pie. But, when cranberries find their way into this easy-to-bake loaf cake, that makes all the difference in the world.

The finely ground pistachios give it a nice color and rounded nuttiness and the pop in flavor from the lemon and orange juices and zest in both the batter and the sugar glaze, give this loaf cake a beautiful brightness.
